040 2014 Match Day 7

The Heidelberg O-40 squad made a rare visit to Indiana, and initially the visitors looked like the only team ready to play. The first 20 minutes was played almost exclusively in the Indiana end, and Heidelberg seemed to have a nearly endless series of corner kicks. However, determined play by keeper Kevin Kerr and the Indiana backs somehow kept the score at 0-0. As the game neared halftime, play started to even out, with both teams manufacturing several good scoring opportunities, but no goals. In the second half, the hosts finally started to assert themselves – while Heidelberg continued to attack, Indiana was getting the majority of the opportunities. Finally, a corner kick from Chad Hojnoski found Bryan Wilkins unmarked off the far post. Wilkins was at least 10 yards from the goal, but he drove the header toward the opposite corner, and the ball somehow made it through the crowded box to give Indiana the lead. The lead looked solid until 18 minutes to go, when there was a scramble at the top of the Indiana penalty box. The ball fell to a Heidelberg attacker, who struck it through the legs of a defender. Keeper Kerr was screened, and by the time he saw the ball, it was too late, and the game was tied. However, Indiana continued to attack, and with 8 minutes to go, a deflection bounded out to Hojnoski, who was standing halfway between the penalty box and midfield. Hojnoski unleashed a wicked blast that ripped into the bottom-left corner of the goal, and Indiana had regained the lead. Solid defense finished the match to give Indiana a hard-fought 2-1 win. Indiana hosts 1st-place Mt. Lebanon on Sept. 13.
