Indiana O-40 opened the 2014 season hosting Pittsburgh Dynamo at the IHS turf field. The weather was cool and rainy, and the first half was about what one would expect from a season opener: disjointed play full of mistakes and unrealized scoring opportunities. The score was 0-0 at the break, and the outcome very much in doubt. However, early on in the second half, Indiana started to control the game. First, a long through-ball from Chad Hojnoski found Matt McKelvy behind the Dynamo defense, and McKelvy slotted a low shot past the keeper to give Indiana the lead. About 10 minutes later, Hojnoski hit a left-footed chip from just outside the penalty box that tucked in just under the crossbar to increase Indiana’s lead to 2-0. Finally, with about 15 minutes remaining, Bryan Wilkins took a cross left of the Dynamo goal, beat a man and shot low for the far post. The Dynamo keeper read the shot, but what he didn’t expect was the deflection off his own player’s leg, and he watched helplessly as the ball went in the seal the game for Indiana. Keeper Kevin Kerr and the Indiana defense played solidly all day to preserve the shutout. Indiana travels to Heidelberg for next Saturday’s match.
